چکیده

Single unit responses were recorded from the auditory thalamus of anesthetized squirrel monkeys. The microelectrede penetrations had an orientation perpendicular to the sagittal plane. The small cell division is tonotopically organized. The cells in the most lateral aspect of this division have their 'best frequencies' (BFs) in the low frequency range with a progressive shift in the BF toward the higher frequencies the further medially the sampling progressed. Dorsal to and extending ventromedially are large cells which are darkly stained. In addition there is a bulbous extension more ventrally of large cells less dense and perhaps less darkly stained. The large cells in these subdivisions did not always discharge spontaneously nor were they always responsive to tones. In the dorsal group, there is an initial low to high sequence of BF followed by one or more reversals in BF. Within the border region between the small cell division and both the ventromedial extension and bulbous extension of the large cells there starts a reversal, a high-to-low sequence which occurs within a comparatively short distance. Beyond the initial reversal, in both subdivisions, there are one or two additional reversals of BF.

Pleistocene diversification of living squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.) inferred from complete mitochondrial genome sequences.

In order to enhance our understanding of the evolutionary history of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.), we newly sequenced and analyzed data from seven complete mitochondrial genomes representing six squirrel monkey taxa. While previous studies have lent insights into the taxonomy and phylogeny of the genus, phylogenetic relationships and divergence date estimates among major squirrel monkey clad...

Role of the squirrel monkey in parasitic disease research.

Much controversy exists regarding the species of the squirrel monkey. Napier and Napier (Whitney 1995) divide the squirrel monkeys into two species: Saimiri sciureus and Saimiri osterdii; the former is used in biomedical research. Hershkovitz prefers to use two groups of Saimiri based on facial characteristics and other factors, which include "Roman" and "Gothic" types. He suggests four species...

A comparison of personality in the common and Bolivian squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus and Saimiri boliviensis).

Personality has been studied in all of the great apes, many Old World monkey species, but only a handful of New World monkey species. Because understanding the personalities of New World monkeys is crucial to understanding personality evolution in primates, we used the Hominoid Personality Questionnaire to assess personality in 55 common squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) and 40 Bolivian squir...

Morphology and mitochondrial phylogenetics reveal that the Amazon River separates two eastern squirrel monkey species: Saimiri sciureus and S. collinsi.

Saimiri has a complicated taxonomic history, and there is continuing disagreement about the number of valid taxa. Despite these controversies, one point of consensus among morphologists has been that the eastern Amazonian populations of squirrel monkeys form a single terminal taxon, Saimiri sciureus sciureus (Linnaeus, 1758). This group is distributed to both the north and south of the middle t...

Experimental genital trichomoniasis in the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus).

The squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) has been proposed as a model for urogenital trichomoniasis in man, but has not been accepted as such because of the purported presence of naturally occurring vaginal trichomonads in this animal. The study published here shows that these are easily eradicated organisms of intestinal origin, which eliminates the potential confusion created by them. In additi...
